What it is

In Barcelona, the volante de residencia proves that a person is registered in the city, showing their address and since when; the volante de convivencia proves where and with whom they are registered on the date it is requested. It is free and can be requested online, by phone, in person or at a kiosk. Its validity depends on the authority requesting it and counts from the date of issue. To prove residence or cohabitation at a Barcelona address where you are no longer registered, or cohabitation on an earlier date, you must request a historical registration certificate.

When

The residence volante proves where you live and since when; the cohabitation volante, where and with whom you live on the date requested. It is free; its validity depends on the administration requesting it.

Steps

  1. Step 1: Online

    From age 16 you can get your residence volante, and adults the cohabitation one. You open the form, check your data, choose the type and language, and download the PDF.

  2. Step 2: By phone (010)

    Call 010 and give your name, surname, date of birth, ID and address. It arrives by post at your registered address in about 7 working days; the residence one can also be emailed (up to 24 hours), only if it is for you or a child you live with.

  3. Step 3: In person, by appointment

    Book an appointment at an Oficina de Atenció Ciutadana and bring the documents (for example, a valid residence card or passport). The volante is issued on the spot.

FAQ

Do I have to renew my padrón registration?

Yes, if you are from a non-EU country without permanent residence: every two years from registration. Otherwise the Ayuntamiento will remove you from the padrón.

Can I request the cohabitation volante for my minor child?

No: a cohabitation volante is never issued in the name of an unemancipated minor; it is issued in the name of the applicant. For the child you can request the residence volante.
