What it is

Barcelona City Council registers on the Padrón people who usually live in the city (or for most of the year, if they live in several municipalities); people living with you can be registered in the same procedure. Registration is compulsory and free, and can be done at any time, online, by phone or in person. People who have no document proving where they live or have no fixed address must do it in person and provide the residence knowledge report (informe de conocimiento de residencia). If a rental contract is provided, it must include the full address, cadastral reference, annual rent, term, start date, payment method and the details and signatures of the owner and the tenant. Nationals of non-EU countries without permanent residence in Spain must renew their registration every two years from the initial registration; otherwise the City Council will remove them from the register.

Steps

  1. Step 1: Choose how to do it

    Online (with electronic identification and signature), by phone (010) or in person with an appointment at a Citizen Service Office (OAC). People aged 18 or over can do it. Those without a document proving where they live, or with no fixed address, must go in person.

  2. Step 2: Prepare the documents

    You need the address documents plus those for your situation (alone, with other adults, with children…). They must be paper originals, in Catalan or Spanish, or translated by the consulate, a sworn translator or a public administration and accompanied by the original. Printed copies of electronically signed authorisations are not accepted.

  3. Step 3: Do the procedure

    In person, you hand in the documents on the day of your appointment. Online you fill in the form, attach the documents and sign. By phone you call 010 and give your details; the City Council then posts you the application and instructions, and you have 1 month to return it signed with the documents.

  4. Step 4: Result

    In person, registration is done on the spot whenever possible. Online, if the documents are correct, you receive an email confirming it in about 7 calendar days. The maximum time to reply is 3 months.

I have no contract in my name or authorisation. Can I register?

Yes. Hand in, in person, an application stating who is registering and at what address, plus the address verification form. The City Council checks that you live there and, once confirmed, registers you and posts the certificates.

What must the rental contract show?
