Replacing a lost or stolen TIE

Duplicado de la TIE por pérdida, robo o deterioro

What it is

The National Police portal has no separate page on replacing a TIE. Its page on the return authorisation says that holders of a valid TIE that was stolen, lost, destroyed or damaged may apply for a return authorisation if they prove they have applied for a duplicate card (form EX13, fee 790 code 012, in person).

Igualmente, la persona titular de una tarjeta de identidad de extranjero en vigor podrá solicitar una autorización de regreso en caso de robo, extravío, destrucción o inutilización de aquélla, siempre que acredite haber presentado solicitud de duplicado de la tarjeta.

When

When the card has been lost, stolen, destroyed or made unusable. The new card does not count as a renewal and is valid for the time the old one had left.

Steps

  1. Step 1: Report the loss or theft

    For a duplicate due to loss or theft you submit the police report; if the card is unusable, you hand in the card.

  2. Step 2: Book an appointment and apply

    You apply in person at the National Police Documentation Unit (Oficina de Extranjeros or police station) in your province, booking an appointment on the public administrations e-office.

FAQ

I have to travel before I get the new card — what can I do?

If your TIE was valid, you can request a return authorisation, provided you show that you have already applied for the duplicate.

What if it is also time to renew?

If you request the new card within the renewal period of your permit, both procedures are processed together.
