Renovación de la TIE

What it is

The TIE is not renewed separately: first the residence permit is renewed (or the student stay extended) and, within one month of the favourable notification, you apply in person for the new TIE at the police station.

Who it is for

When

For employment, self-employment and study extensions: during the two months before the authorisation expires, or within the three months after it expires. The employment and self-employment sheets add that applying after expiry may lead to a penalty procedure.

Steps

  1. Step 1: Apply to renew the authorisation (or extend the study stay)

    Employed work: in person at the Oficina de Extranjería of your province of residence or online (Mercurio). Self-employment: the official sheet only mentions online filing (Mercurio). Student extension: compulsorily online, addressed to the Oficina de Extranjería of the province where the initial permit was obtained.

  2. Step 2: Pay the renewal fees

    The fees become due when the application is filed and must be paid within ten working days. Employed work: form 790 code 052, section 2.2.3 (paid by the worker) and form 790 code 062, section 3.2.2 (paid by the employer). Self-employment: form 790 code 052, section 2.2.3 and form 790 code 062, section 3.3.2.

  3. Step 3: Wait for the decision

    If the application is filed on time, the previous permit remains valid until a decision is made. Work (employed and self-employed): decision period of three months; if nothing is notified, it is deemed granted by administrative silence, and the renewal is valid for four years. Student extension: if nothing is notified within a month, it is deemed refused; the extension lasts as long as the course, up to one year and up to two extensions.

  4. Step 4: Book an appointment and apply for the new TIE (fingerprints)

    National Police

    Within one month of the favourable notification, apply in person for the TIE at the police station or competent police services where you live, with form EX-17 and proof of payment of the fee form 790 code 012.

Can I still renew if my authorisation has already expired?

Yes, within three months after expiry. The employment and self-employment sheets say a penalty procedure may then be opened; the study-extension sheet does not mention it.

Is my authorisation still valid while the application is processed?

If the application was filed on time, the validity of the previous permit is extended until the decision.

Can I travel while the renewal is in progress?

Yes, with a return authorisation (autorización de regreso), issued to anyone who shows they applied for renewal or extension on time. Requested before expiry, it is valid up to 90 days from expiry; requested after, up to 90 days from when it is granted.
