Subsidio por desempleo

What it is

If you are not entitled to the contributory benefit, have used it up or are in another protected situation, the SEPE offers several allowances regulated by Royal Decree-law 2/2024: after the contributory benefit runs out, for insufficient contributions, for people over 52, for returning emigrants, for victims of gender-based or sexual violence and the agricultural allowance. For the allowance after the benefit runs out you must be unemployed (or working part-time), have used up a contributory benefit on or after 1 November 2024, sign the activity agreement, meet the lack-of-income condition and/or prove family responsibilities and be registered as a job seeker. You receive 95 % of the IPREM for the first 180 days, 90 % from day 181 to 360 and 80 % afterwards; it is granted for renewable quarters. The initial application can only be made in the six months after the benefit runs out, on the SEPE online portal, at the benefits office with an appointment, at a public registry or by administrative post.

When

You can only apply for the exhaustion subsidy within six months of your contributory benefit running out. If you apply within the following fifteen working days, it starts the day after it ran out; if later (within the six months), it starts on the day you apply.

  1. Step 1: Check the requirements

    Be fully unemployed or part-time; have exhausted a contributory benefit on or after 1 November 2024; sign the activity agreement; declare your and your family’s income for the previous month; meet the lack-of-income requirement and/or have family responsibilities; and be registered as a job seeker. If you were under 45 and the exhausted benefit lasted less than 360 days, you must prove family responsibilities.

  2. Step 2: Submit the application

    Submit the official application form, which includes the declaration of last month’s income, with the documents. You must be registered as a job seeker when it is decided.

  3. Step 3: Get paid and request extensions

    Paid monthly, between the 10th and 15th of the following month, into an account in your name. It is granted by quarters: every three months you request the extension, with proof you still qualify, within fifteen working days of the end of the quarter.

The subsidy is 95 % of the monthly IPREM for the first 180 days, 90 % from day 181 to 360 and 80 % from day 361.

How long does it last?

It depends on your age when the benefit ran out, whether you have family responsibilities and how long the benefit lasted: for example, 6 months without family responsibilities (under 45 with a benefit of 360 days or more), and up to 30 months with family responsibilities and a benefit of 180 days or more.
