What it is

In Catalonia, the large family certificate officially recognises a family as large and gives access to advantages and benefits; each member has a personal card valid throughout Spain, which since 1 March 2025 is digital, on the phone (La meva Cartera). Among others, one or two parents, foster carers or guardians with three or more dependent children, shared or not, can apply; in some cases two children are enough (for example, if a parent has a disability of 65 % or more). All members giving entitlement must live legally in Spain, and children must be under 21 (up to 25 if studying). It can be requested at any time, online or in person, and is free; you provide the DNI or NIE of all members (non-EU minors must have an NIE from age 1) and the family book or birth certificates, among other things. In person, with all documents, it can be obtained on the spot; online, the answer comes in 30 to 40 days. For foreign nationals, the certificate is valid for as long as the residence permit, and in general it is renewed every two years.
